My current role as Assistant Technical Director is to support the design managers in completing live and forthcoming projects
and provide a reporting role to the senior management team
My duties include
My current role as Senior Design Manager, is to support live projects in ensuring a smooth
handover of the various schemes and compliance with the statutory authorities.
My duties include
Working with the site team My role is to manage the day to day compliance of the buildings design
and technical matters by managing the design team outputs and sub contractor information to ensure
the construction programme progresses.
My duties include
Working with the estimating team, I was responsible for reviewing tender information for the potential projects that CPUK
would hopefully go on to construct. Working as a team with the estimators and the construction planner we would develop
robust proposals for the construction projects, many of which we were successful in winning.
Duties would include
In addition to tenders I was responsible for managing the design teams through PCSA agreements and negotiated tenders, whilst working on negotiated tenders it would be my duty to determine and manage the issue of the scope of design information to enable accurate costing for the CSA
During my time with CPUK, I worked on the majority of new tenders into the office, at times working on up to five schemes concurrently. Schemes which included:-
Robertson Construction, one of the largest contractors in Scotland are looking to expand their business into the North west of England.
In order to develop their plan the local office at Haydock was realised along with a number of key Projects.
To assist in the development of the office i was asked to take the role of Design manager to look after their current live
projects including:-
As Design Manager, my duties were to manage the design team to ensure successful release of design information to meet the construction programme and the clients budget. Using the procurement schedule an IRS was created to schedule out the delivery of design information. As well as the IRS the design was developed by having regular design team meetings and package workshops held with the construction team, the design team and supply chain to discuss the many challenges involved with producing high quality construction projects.
Whilst working for Watkin Jones I was transferred to Newmark Developments. Newmark Developments work with the companies land bank and design teams from around the country to provide quality development sites and projects for construction and onward sale to investment companies.
Working within Newmark Developments my role was to work with the design teams and secondary consultants to develop and collate sufficient design from inception through to developed design along with associated reports and approvals to allow the development to become a viable portfolio scheme. working on schemes such as:-
Within this role I would be responsible for ensuring the development was feasible and practical including reviews with stakeholders and authorities such as:-
At the time of moving to Watkin Jones (Homes Division) they were currently looking after three main schemes of student accommodation in London and Birmingham, for which I provided the Design Manager role concurrently.
As design manager for these schemes It was my duty to schedule out and ensure delivery of design information to the site construction teams to allow them to complete the schemes on time.
A long with the main core of design information including Mechanical, Electrical and Public health, I would also manage the secondary consultants for the likes of BREEAM accreditation, SAP calcs, Planning approval and fire and Acoustic consultants
Having had Prior experience with the BSF schemes in Manchester I joined Morgan Sindall to work on their BSF project in Liverpool for the Broughton Hall and Cardinal Heenan schools. The overall scheme consisted of 2 large secondary schools which were to be integrated on the same site and share a sixth form facility.
Working initially as support for the Senior Design Manager, and subsequently working alone, my role was to ensure the design team where able to provide the design information and details to allow the construction teams to construct the new schools.
Utilising the IRS for the scheme and working in conjunction with the Project manager and planner, I would hold regular reviews with the design team, to ensure design was being delivered as agreed on the project IRS.
Toward the end of the project I was given the task of collecting and collating the information required to meet the BREEAM accreditation required by the scheme.
On successful completion of the project I was to get involved with other schemes for the company including:-
All of these schemes provided their own separate challenges, aside form the general management of the design team, but all of these schemes provided their own learning events that would affect the way I now review designers and the information they provide.
Having spent the last 17 years of my working life working in architects offices the move to a main tier 1 contractor as a Design Coordinator was a considerable change in track, but one i have since come to enjoy.
The first scheme I was responsible for was a twenty six storey residential block on the Liverpool waterfront, being some four metres away from the river Mersey and over one hundred metres tall, The Alexandra Tower block was a fantastic scheme to work on.
Following on after the completion of the scheme, I was to get involved in several other schemes including:-
Working with the other Design Managers and utilising skills inherent from my work in Architectural offices I quickly developed into a reliable Design Manager, capable of looking after a construction project unaided
The experience listed on the left is a general overview of my experience working with contractors and the roles and duties I have carried out and been responsible for.
