Assistant Technical Director at Watkin Jones

Biography.

I am an Assistant Technical Director for Watkin Jones working in the construction industry with a solid technical background from working in Architectural practice, coupled with my experience from working with construction companies since 2006, on a wide variety of different Project types , I have been able to learn and understand more and more about the design process and how this affects our modern day construction methods.

I began my career in building and construction as a building surveying technician in 1989 having secured my first place of work at Povall Worthington prior to leaving school. As well as enrolling on the first of many part time courses and learning how to operate CAD systems, I got to work with some of the most prestigious buildings around the North West including the Port of Liverpool building and Liverpool's municipal library.

Over the following 17 years I worked in Architectural practice's in the North West, producing detail and design drawings for a wide variety of projects, all the time increasing my scope of awareness for both design and construction.

During this period I qualified ONC, HNC and HND in building studies as well as courses in AutoCAD 3D studio MAX and and Autolisp programming.

In 2006 I was offered a role as design coordinator for Laing O'Rourke and was immediatley moved to site to look after the the Alexandra Tower project on the Liverpool waterfront where I cut my teeth working for construction companies. I learnt a vast amount from both the project team and the design function members and gained another view on how design affects construction first hand.

Since then I have work for construction companies in the field of Design Management, dealing with all aspects, and all phases of design and construction.
Alexandra Tower
Project Development - Early Design stages
During my time working with Newmark Developments I got involved with the very early stages of design and developing the early concepts such as the 42 storey tower in Cardiff into planning drawings to gain approval, with a view to developing that design further on to construction.

Tendering, Negotiated tenders and Pre Construction Service Agreements.
In most of my previous roles I have gotten involved with estimating teams working on tenders to secure projects. Most recently, at CPUK I was working on anywhere between three and six schemes concurrently, assisting in the preparation of contractors proposals and searching for value engineering in the projects to ensure the clients budget could be achieved.

Live sites.
As you will see from my Projects page . I have also had considerable experience in working with site teams to manage live sites. Dealing with appointments and design responsibility, between the design team and supporting consultants; the planning, coordination and transfer of design information, to sub contractors and vice versa; securing BREEAM accreditation, and compliance with the clients brief, and statutory authorities and legislation.

Team management.
More recently, i have been working with the senior management team to resource, support and develop the design management team members within Watkin Jones.
